June's meeting features a speaker followed by a panel discussion focusing on safety and international travel.

Our speaker is Vidya Nair, Pharm.D. is a highly accomplished medical professional, author, entrepreneur and humanitarian with a global perspective. She is also founder of TravelRx, a company that deploys clinical pharmacists on-site to provide travel health services to groups of clients traveling to developing countries.

The village is now global. What that means for travelers to the developing world is that infectious diseases threaten not only personal health at the micro level, but the families, co-workers and others that make up the macro-community.

Vidya's talk begins with a case history of one traveler’s medical odyssey through a malarial infection and the associated economic costs. We will discuss and define travelers’ medications (prophylactics), common vaccines, and lifestyle tactics to help the audience understand best practices in travel health. Vidya will also share a simple ROI tool that can be used to show how disease affects a company’s bottom line. Handouts and collateral materials will also be provided after the presentation.

Our panel discussion will feature Lisa van Ommen, travel manager at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Mary Koon from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They will be discuss how their non-profits are working through the challenges of safety while traveling to developing countries.
